GU13 Advances to Round of 32 at State Cup After an Incredible Weekend

The GU13 played fearless at their first weekend of State Cup in Lancaster, CA.  The team faced three tough teams.  With two wins and one loss the GU13s were able to advance into the next round of State Cup.

In STORM GU13’s first game they faced Downey FC a Coast League Silver Elite North Team.  The game was a very physical and an exciting game, with both teams playing superior defense and offense.  STORM had several shots on goal, yet all blocked.  With only five minutes left in the game, Downey FC scored a goal to win the game.

The afternoon game STORM GU13 competed against Greater Long Beach SC Ascend another Coast League Team.  STORM showed them who was in control of the game; 45 seconds at the start of the game GU13s Marissa Medici put on into the back of the net.  It set the tone for the game.  GU13s played incredible defense from Amanda Goya, Rachel Kent, Elise Harris, and Kendall Capra.  GU13 Rachel O’Brien and Marissa stepped up and scored two goals, giving STORM a three goal advantage.  The team had great mid-field and offensive attack that full-time goal keeper Jenna Carpenter was able to play right wing mid during the second half of the game.  Justine McBride played stellar defense as 2nd half goal keeper.  GU13 played a shut-out game with a 3 to 0 win.

GU13s mid-town rivals Albion took the field for game number three at opening weekend.  Having played the team twice the year before STORM knew going in that this would be a tough game.  Albion coming off of an impressive 12-0-2 season STORM GU13 was prepared for the battle field.  STORM made the first attack by scoring an early game goal from Rachel O’Brien with a splendid assist by Emily Pickering.  Mid-field attack by Suzannah Saldana, Ashley Frechette, Nicole Columbus, and Olivia Angelucci gave the GU13s field advantage in the attacking end of Albion.  A break-away from Marissa Mesquita and a cross-goal shot took STORM up by 2.  Within two minutes an incredible mid-field cross-bar shot from Tess Roletti scored goal number 3 to shut-down Albion.  Not only did GU13s shut-down Albion, but shut them out with complete solid defense by Olivia Chunka and Rebecca Mitchell.  In winning a 3 to 0 game it not only advanced STORM to the round of 32 at State Cup, but knocked out mid-town rivals Albion from advancing.
